Daisy- the cheerful flower originates from a perennial herbaceous plant. This plant has short rhizomes and rosettes of small rounded or spoon-shaped leaves. They grow best in lawns and is difficult to remove them by mowing and that’s why they are known as “lawn daisy”. April means spring time and daises populate the gardens and lawns in this time. Therefore, daisy is declared as the April Flower.

  • Daisies are more than 4000 years old on this planet.
  • The word daisy arrives from the Old English "daes eage," which means "day's eye." You must be wondering why this name is given? Actually, this flower closes their petals in the evening, and open again at dawn just like our eyes that closes after sunset to sleep and opens in the morning with sunrise. It thus marks the start of a new day. 
  • The commonest sight of daisy is soft white petals with a yellow dial. But do you know that this lively flower comes in other colours like yellow, red, orange, etc.?
  • In general, daisies symbolise childhood, innocence, simple joys of life, and strength to change.
  • The purple daisy symbolise success and dignity while the yellow daisy symbolise friendship. Peace is reflected by the blue daisy while the white daisy stand for modesty.
  • There is a story in Roman mythology about daisies. It is said that a nymph named Belides once transformed herself into a daisy just to escape the unwanted attention from one of the gods. Since the it is associated with change it new beginnings. 
  • In a bouquet or bunch, they would be a great gift for new moms as they symbolise fertility too.
  • Many people believe that daisies keep lightning away and that’s why they were grown indoors.
  • In England, daisy is also known as “bruisewort”. That’s because the crushed leaves of daisies can treat bruises or wounds.
  • Daisies adapt beautifully to any environment. They are tough to kill and that’s why you will find them almost everywhere except Antarctica. Daisy constitute 10% of the flowering plants on earth.
  • This beautiful flower also has medicinal properties. The daisy tea is  believed to ease coughs, slow down bleeding, and relieve indigestion.
  • The leaves of daisy flowering plant are eaten as salads and they are a great source of Vitamin C.
