What Is Pride Month?
Why June?
Pride Month honours the Stonewall Riots of June 1969 in New York City - a pivotal uprising by LGBTQ+ people against police raids, widely considered the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement worldwide.Image Source: Unsplash
Pride in Singapore: A Brief History
Singapore's Pride story is inseparable from Pink Dot SG, the nation's signature LGBTQ+ gathering. Pink Dot began in 2009 with a small gathering at Hong Lim Park, the country's only legal public assembly space, making it Singapore's historic first open-air LGBT-supportive event. The name was a deliberate play on Singapore's identity as "The Red Dot," with pink representing what happens when the red and white of the Singapore flag blend together. Pink Dot invites attendees to form a giant human pink dot, symbolising the freedom to love. Over the years, the event drew over 26,000 participants at its peak, inspiring similar Pink Dot events in cities including London, Montreal, Hong Kong, and beyond. The road hasn't always been smooth. Corporate sponsorship from international companies faced restrictions, and same-sex relations remained technically illegal under Section 377A until Singapore formally repealed it in 2022, a landmark moment for the community. Today, same-sex sexual activity is legal for both men and women in Singapore, and Pink Dot's focus has shifted to ensuring LGBTQIA+ people and their families can lead full, open lives in the city-state. This rich history makes every LGBT pride month in Singapore a moment to both celebrate progress and acknowledge how much further the community still hopes to go.Pride Month Fun Facts

Pride Is Also LGBTQ Awareness Month
Beyond the celebrations, June is also recognised as LGBTQ awareness month, a time for education, allyship, and advocacy. In Singapore, this means supporting community organisations like Oogachaga (counselling for LGBTQ+ people), The T Project (supporting transgender individuals), Proud Spaces, and Pink Dot SG itself, which is entirely volunteer-run and community-funded. Being an ally isn't just for June. Use this month as a starting point: listen to LGBTQ+ stories, amplify queer voices, and stand against discrimination in everyday spaces, at work, at home, and in your community.Image Source: Unsplash
