What does the year of the Ox mean? To understand the Ox's significance for 2021, you need to understand what the animal represents. There are various Chinese myths, folk customs, and legends related to the Ox that have passed down several generations. The Chinese zodiac, also known as Shu Xiang or Sheng Xiao, is based on 12 animal signs in the order - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig. Each year is represented by one zodiac animal, such as 2020 was the year of the Rat, 2021 is the year of the Ox. Just like western astrology has twelve signs, each dedicated to a particular month determining a person's personality, compatibility, career, and fortune, the Chinese zodiac functions on similar lines. Why is the Ox the second animal?  There is one myth that describes the reason behind the Ox being the second animal in the zodiac. It goes as; one day, the Jade Emperor of China decided that the structure of the zodiac would be based on the order in which the animals arrive at this party. It is believed that the Ox was amongst the first ones to reach but stopped on the way to give the Rat a ride. When the moment came, the Rat quickly jumped ahead of the Ox. Thus, the cleverness of the Rat made the Ox lose its first place. Years of the Ox  Each year's zodiac animal representation is based on the 12-year cycle.
