About World Health Day

In the year 1948, the World Health Organization or WHO organized the 1st World Health Assembly. That assembly later on decided 7th April to be celebrated as World Health Day with effect from the year 1950. World Health Day is one of the 8 official global health campaigns started by WHO. The rest are- World No Tobacco Day, World Tuberculosis Day, World Malaria Day, World AIDS Day, World Immunization Week, World Hepatitis Day, and World Blood Donor Day.

World Health Day became an opportunity for WHO to involve more on the subject of health. Since then, WHO organizes global, regional, and local events on this day dedicated to a particular theme. This day is acknowledged by major clubs or organizations of the world working in the sector of public health.

As this is the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, WHD will throw a light on the dynamic role played by nurses and midwives in providing health care across the world. It will strengthen the nursing and midwifery workforce.

Thus on 7th April, one of the main events will be the launch of the first-ever State of the World’s Nursing Report 2020. This report will showcase the global picture of the nursing force and will support evidence-based planning to augment the contributions of this workforce to improve the health and well-being of all. A similar report on Midwifery will be launched in 2021.
